Bonny Method Level I
About Level I Training
INTRO
The introductory training seminar in the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music is taught as a 5-day, 45-hour intensive with additional assignments before and after the seminar. This immersion in the Bonny Method offers experienced therapists an entryway into training in this method and provides advanced students in music therapy and mental health professions with an experiential taste of the power of music as an agent of change. Also included is training in relaxation inductions and supportive music and imagery. A minimum of one personal GIM session with a trained facilitator and a complete music program is pre-requisite to this training; additional sessions are recommended.
Through lectures, demonstrations, and supervised experiences in the roles of guide/therapist and traveler/client, this introductory level training will prepare an introduction to the professional practice of GIM and prepare participants to demonstrate emerging skills in the following:
• Facilitating relaxation inductions (CBMT Domain III.A.2.pp, III.A.5.t, III.A.5.gg)
• Providing supportive music and imagery (CBMT Domain III.A.5.aa)
• Basic guiding interventions (CBMT Domain I.3, III.A.5.ff)
• Verbal and nonverbal processing techniques (CBMT Domain II.A.1.b, III.A.2.fff)
This course will address following AMTA Advanced Competencies:
•I.A.1.2 Differentiate the theoretical orientations of The Bonny Method from theories of other music therapy approaches
•I.B.4.3 Understand the contraindications of music therapy
•II.B.8.1 Utilize self-awareness and insight to deepen the client’s process in music therapy.
•II.B.8.2 Identify one’s personal issues as may be relevant to the music therapy process.
•II.B.8 3 Use personal reflection
•II.B.8.4 Practice strategies for self-care
Following completion of the Level I seminar, the therapist may facilitate relaxation experiences or simple and structured music and imagery techniques (not GIM) with peers or with those groups or individuals in a clinical setting in which the therapist has experience and for whom such an intervention is indicated. As a depth-oriented therapy in non-ordinary states of consciousness, safe and ethical practice of GIM requires training and supervision beyond the introductory Level I training. Satisfactory completion of Level I training may be used toward completion of requirements for becoming a Fellow of the Association for Music and Imagery and will meet the prerequisite for GIM Level II training, after which trainees may be approved for limited supervised practice of GIM.
